The National Economic and Development Authority-XI in coordination with the Philippine Statistics Authority-RSSO XI hosted the 28th National Statistics Month (NSM) Opening Ceremony on October 6, 2017 at the Pinnacle Hotel and Suites, Santa Ana Ave., Davao City.
The theme of this year’s NSM is “Facts and Figures for the Future: Statistics for Evidence-Based Decisions Towards AmBisyon Natin 2040.” The program featured presentations that highlighted the role of reliable and factual statistics to track the Philippines’ progress towards its long-term vision where all Filipinos are envisioned to have a matatag, maginhawa, at panatag na buhay (stable, comfortable and secured life).
The Keynote speech was given by Dr. Rosemarie G. Edillion, Undersecretary for National Development Policy and Planning of NEDA Central Office, with her presentation “Facts and Figures for the Future” wherein she stressed the challenges (especially in the statistics community) towards the Philippines’ Long-term Development Agenda.
Also, a Socioeconomic Situationer of Davao Region was given by OIC-ARD Priscilla R. Sonido of NEDA XI. Other presentations included “Empowering Citizens to be Critical in Processing Information in the Age of Social Media” which was presented by ASec Efren F. Elbanbuena, the regional director of PIA XI and “Cultivating Innovative Young Minds through Public Policy Integration and Use of Official Statistics in the Academe” by Dr. Raul C. Alvarez, Jr., the regional director of CHED XI.
After the presentations, an open forum followed. Participants of the opening ceremony included several regional line agencies, local government units, academic institutions, state universities and colleges, and the private sector.
SOCD Chief Rosendo M. Aya-ay gave the closing remarks in lieu of PSA XI RD Eddie E. Nasol.
Pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 647, “Declaring the Month of October of Every Year as the National Statistics Month,” the NSM aims to promote nationwide awareness and appreciation of the value of statistics among different sectors of society.
