Swine Inventory increased by 34.42 percent in the province
The total inventory of swine in the province is estimated at 34,969 heads or 34.42 percent increase as of 01 July 2023 compared to 26,015 heads as of 01 July 2022 (Table 1).
Smallhold inventory of swine increased by 34.42 percent with an estimated 32,261 heads as of 01 July 2023 compared to 24,000 heads as of 01 July 2022. Meanwhile, commercial inventory as of as of 01 July 2023 increased by 34.39 percent with an estimated 2,708 heads compared to 2,015 heads as of 01 July 2022 (Figure 1).
Number of heads slaughtered in Slaughterhouse increased by 28.88 percent
As of 3rd Quarter of 2023 the estimated number of heads slaughtered in slaughterhouse in Davao Occidental increased by 28.88 percent or 1,950 heads compared to 1,513 heads of 3rd Quarter of 2022 (Figure 2).
Swine top in inventory among animal type by farm classification in the province as of 01 July 2023 and 01 July 2022
Swine had the highest estimated number of heads among animal types by farm classification as of 01 July 2023 with 34,969 heads, this is followed by goat with 13,495 heads, cattle with 9,851 heads, and carabao with 1,210 heads. Meanwhile, as of 01 July 2022, swine still had the highest inventory with 26,015 heads, goats with 19,206, cattle with 8,358, and carabao with1,203 heads.
The total inventory by animal types as of 01 July 2023 in the province increased by nine percent compared to the total inventory by animal types as of 01 July 2022, that is 59,525 heads as of 01 July 2023 from 54,782 heads as of 01 July 2022.
Ninety-five percent of the animal type by farm classification as of 01 July 2023 and 01 July 2022 are classified under smallhold.
Technical Notes
Livestock – farm animals kept or raised for consumption and work. For purposes of census and surveys, livestock covers only those that are tended and raised by households.
Swine – a domesticated animal characterized by a stout body, short legs with a long mobile snout. This is also known as pig. This includes foreign breeds, domestic wild pigs (baboy damo), and native breedssuch as Q-Black, Markaduke, Sinirangan, ISUbela, Benguet, and Yooka2.
Animal Population (also Animal Inventory) – the actual number of animals (in head/bird) present in the farm as of a specific reference date regardless of ownership.
Smallhold – Tending 1 to 10 sow level or 1 to 100 heads.
Semi-commercial – Tending 11 to 50 sow level or 101 to 500 heads.
Commercial – Tending 51 sow level and above or 501 heads and above.
Household – A person or group of persons who sleep under the same dwelling unit and usually have a common arrangement in the preparation and consumption of food. The household members may not necessarily be related by ties of kinship, although they are usually relatives. In some instances, more than one household may occupy the same dwelling unit.
Establishment – an economic unit which engages under a single ownership or control, i.e., under a single legal entity; in one or predominantly one kind of economic activity at a single fixed physical location. Thus, stores, shops, factories, mining companies, electric plants, transport companies, radio stations, hotels, restaurants, banks, insurance companies, real estate development companies and the like are considered establishments.
Slaughterhouses – premises that are approved and registered by the NMIS and LGUs in which food animals are slaughtered for human consumption.
