An average of 82 deaths daily in Davao Region
Reported deaths in Davao Region in 2018 reached 29,870, an increase of 1.5 percent than the previous year’s 29,415 deaths. This is equivalent to a crude death rate (CDR) of 5.8 or about six (6) persons per thousand population.
An average of 82 persons died daily in 2018, which translates to 3 deaths per hour.
The number of deaths in Davao Region from 2009 to 2018 showed an increasing trend except in the years 2013 and 2014. The increase during the ten-year period is 30.9 percent, from 22,817 in 2009 to 29,870 in 2018 (Figure 1 and Table 1).
One in three deaths recorded in City of Davao
Among the provinces and Highly Urbanized City (HUC) in Davao Region, City of Davao had the highest number of deaths in 2018, with 10,348 (34.6% of region’s total deaths), followed by Davao del Norte with 6,655 (22.3%) and Compostela Valley with 4,337 (14.5%).
On the other hand, Davao Occidental had the least number of deaths with 992 (3.3%) (Figure 2 and Table 2).

More deaths in males than females
Figure 3 shows the the age and sex pattern of deaths in 2018. It reflects an inverted pyramid, with fewer deaths at the younger ages, except for children under one, and progressively increasing as people grow older.
The number of deaths in males (17,675) was higher than deaths in females (12,195) in 2018.
Highest proportion of males died at the age of 65 to 69 (11.0% or 1,941) while largest proportion of females (12.9% or 1,571) died in their oldest age group, 85 years old and over (Table 3).
Less than half of deaths not medically attended
Medically attended deaths are those attended by a medical doctor or any other allied health care provider.
Out of 29,870 registered deaths in Davao Region, less than half or 13,891 were medically attended. The percentage of medically attended deaths in the provinces and HUC ranges from 33.1 in Davao Occidental to 49.9 in Davao del Sur (Table 4).
Highest number of infant deaths recorded in City of Davao
Infant deaths are deaths that occurred before reaching age 1. In Davao Region, 1,073 infant deaths were registered in 2018. Three out of five deaths were males (635 or 59.2%).
Among the provinces and HUC, City of Davao registered the highest number of infant deaths with 409 (38.1%), followed by Davao del Norte with 263 (24.5%).
On the other hand, Davao Occidental had the least number of registered infant deaths with 20 (1.9%) (Table 5).
Highest number of maternal deaths recorded in City of Davao
According to World Health Organization, maternal death is a “death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy, irrespective of the duration and site of the pregnancy, from any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management but not from accidental or incidental causes. In 2018, there were 77 registered maternal deaths in Davao Region.
Among the provinces and HUC, City of Davao registered the highest number of maternal deaths with 23 (29.9%), followed by Compostela Valley with 17 (22.1%).
On the other hand, Davao Occidental had the least number of registered maternal deaths with 4 (5.2%) (Table 6).
EXPLANATORY NOTES
Data on deaths presented in this release were obtained from the Certificates of Death (Municipal Form No. 103) that were registered at the Office of the City/Municipal Civil Registrars in Davao Region and forwarded to the Philippine Statistics Authority. Information presented includes registered deaths which occurred from January to December 2018. Figures presented are not adjusted for under-registration.
Death refers to the permanent disappearance of all evidence of life at any time after live birth has taken place. It is a postnatal cessation of vital functions without capability of resuscitation.
Usual Place of Residence refers to the place where the deceased had habitually or permanently resided while still alive.

President Benigno S. Aquino III signed Proclamation No. 1106 on August 20, 2015 which declared the years 2015 to 2024 as Civil Registration and Vital Statistics Decade (CRVS). Said proclamation is a concrete manifestation of the Philippine government’s support to the outcome of the Ministerial Conference on CRVS in Asia and the Pacific held in November 2014 in Bangkok, Thailand.
