Deaths in 2022 decreased by 21.3 percent 

In 2022, Davao del Norte recorded a total of 15,952 deaths, reflecting a 21.3 percent decline from the 20,269 deaths in 2021 (Figure 1). This results in a crude death rate of 14.9, or 15 deaths per 1,000 Davaonon. On average, this equates to 44 deaths per day, or nearly 2 deaths per hour.

Moreover, Davao del Norte recorded a total of 7,668 and 8,284 registered deaths at the usual residence and place of occurrence, respectively (Figure 2).

Highest number of deaths were reported in the City of Tagum

Recorded deaths at the usual residence and place of occurrence were both highest at the City of Tagum with 27.2 and 42.1 percent shares, respectively (Figure 3).

Among the eleven local government units in Davao del Norte, the Municipality of San Isidro had the lowest recorded deaths by place of occurrence, with 1.29 percent, followed by Talaingod (1.30%) and Braulio E. Dujali (2.6%). 

Meanwhile, Talaingod had the lowest percentage of deaths by usual residence (1.8%), followed by San Isidro (2.0%) and Braulio E. Dujali (2.4%).

More male deaths than female deaths in Davao del Norte

In 2022, out of the total of 15,952 recorded deaths, 59.0 percent were male, accounted to 9,404 deaths. 

Meanwhile, 6,548 recorded deaths were female, comprising 41.0 percent of the total (Figure 4).

 

 

Senior Citizens had the highest number of registered deaths

In 2022, most registered deaths by usual residence among males were senior citizens, with the highest number of deaths occurring in ages 65 to 69 years old at 563 deaths, followed by 489 deaths in ages 60 to 64 years old, and 488 deaths in ages 70 to 74 years old. 

Among females, the highest number of deaths occurred in ages 85 and over with 366 deaths, followed by 359 deaths in ages 65 to 69 years old, and 346 deaths in ages 70 to 74 years old (Figure 5).

Similarly, the highest number of registered deaths by place of occurrence among males were senior citizens, with 593 deaths in ages 65 to 69 years old, followed by 513 deaths in ages 60 to 64 years old, and 506 deaths in ages 70 to 74 years old. 

Among females, the highest number of deaths occurred in ages 85 and over with 378 deaths, followed by 375 deaths in ages 65 to 69 years old, and 369 deaths in ages 70 to 74 years old (Figure 6).

January had the highest occurrence of deaths

Figure 7 revealed that in 2022, most registered deaths by usual residence occurred in the month of January at 786 deaths. This was followed by the months of October (678 deaths), and August (666 deaths). For registered deaths by place of occurrence, most registered deaths occurred still in the month of January (854 deaths), followed by the months of September (717 deaths), and December (715 deaths). 

Moreover, the least number of deaths, both at the usual residence and place of occurrence, were recorded in the month April with 618 and 559 deaths, respectively.

High rate of unattended deaths

As shown in Figure 8, of the 7,668 deaths by usual residence, 4,557 (59.4%) were unattended by health care providers, 2,557 (33.3%) were attended at hospitals, 292 (3.8%) were attended by public health officers, and 246 (3.2%) were attended by private physicians.

Meanwhile, by place of occurrence with 8,284 total registered deaths, there were 4,602 (55.6%) unattended deaths, 3,047 (36.8%) were attended by hospital authorities, 322 were attended by private physicians, and 296 (3.6%) were attended by public health officers.

As shown in Figure 9, out of 8,284 registered deaths by place of occurrence, 4,755 (57.4%) occurred at home, while 3,389 (40.9%) took place in health facilities. Deaths also occurred in other locations such as streets, public places, or while in transit (vehicle, airplane, vessel), accounting for 140 individuals (1.7%). 

All deaths in Davao del Norte in 2022 were registered by place of occurrence, with no cases in the Not Stated category.

 

Explanatory Note

Data on deaths presented in this release were obtained from the Certificates of Death (Municipal Form No. 103) that were registered at the Local Civil Registry Offices (LCROs) all throughout the province and forwarded to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), Provincial Statistical Offices (PSOs). The information presented includes deaths that occurred from January to December 2022 based on data files received by the PSA, Central Office from the PSOs that were registered as of 06 February 2024. Figures presented herein are not adjusted for under registration.
