Livestock Inventory in Davao del Norte as of July 1, 2021 is reported at 177,533 heads. This denotes a decline of 20.9 percent from the inventory of same period of 2020 with 224,391 total heads (Table 1). Inventory for cattle slightly increased by 0.8 percent (13,383 heads from 13,282 heads in 2021). However, the declines in number of heads are shown from carabao (1.9 percent), goat (2 percent), and swine (31.8 percent).

Of the total livestock inventory in the province, the highest number of heads listed is for swine (97.725 heads), followed by goat (51,827 heads), and carabao (14,598 heads). The least inventory during the period under review is listed for cattle with 13,383 heads.

Livestock inventory for carabao, cattle, goat, and swine are mainly taken from backyard farms. As shown in Figure 1, livestock animals raised in backyard farms comprised of 93 percent with total of 165,598 heads as of July 1, 2021. The remaining 11,935 animals in the inventory are raised in commercial establishments in the province.

Swine inventory shown the highest decline that gives a wider magnitude effect on the total livestock inventory (Figure 2), at 31.8 percent change or a total deficit of 45,594 heads (Table 1). Relatedly, Figure 2 shows that out of the recorded 97,725 heads of swine during the reference period 89 percent of them were raised in backyards farms (86,525 heads) and the remaining 11,200 were raised in commercial farms.

Poultry inventory in Davao del Norte increased by 22.7%

Poultry Inventory in Davao del Norte as of July 1, 2021 is reported at 2,856,707 heads. This denotes an increase of 22.7 percent in inventory from the same period of 2020 (2,327,426 total heads) (Table 2). This inventory reported the total number of chicken and duck with 2,565,638 and 291,069 heads, respectively. For the type of chickens, Broiler recorded the highest increase with 392.2 percent change during the period with 524.219 heads from the 106,509 heads of 2020, followed by native chicken (6.3 percent). On the other hand, decrease was observed for chicken layer (13.3 percent) in the period under review.

During the period, Figure 4 shows that native chicken contributed to almost 70 percent of the total chicken inventory in the province, that is, 1,796,958 heads out of the total 2,565,638. Broiler, contributed to 20 percent or 524,219 heads. Chicken layer being the least contributor to the inventory contributed to only roughly 10 percent (244,461 heads).

TECHNICAL NOTES

The Commercial/Backyard Livestock and Poultry Survey (C/BLPS) are two of the major agricultural surveys conducted by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). The CLPS and BLPS are conducted quarterly for carabao, cattle, swine, goat, sheep, broiler, layer, and duck.The general purpose of CLPS is to generate estimates on inventory, number of animals disposed, average farmgate price, egg production of poultry animals, milk production of dairy animals and other related data.

Another survey that supplements the data requirements of the Livestock and Poultry sector is the Compilation of Data Slaughterhouses and Poultry Dressing Plants (CDSPDP). This is done monthly and utilizes administrative data from Locally Registered Meat Establishments (LRMEs) in the province which is in coordination with the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) and Meat Inspectors (MIs).

• Animal Population (also Animal Inventory) – it is the actual number of animals (in head/bird) present in the establishment as of a specific reference date regardless of ownership.

• Livestock – farm animals kept or raised for consumption, work or leisure. In general, poultry is separated as a distinct group of farm animals. For purposes of census and surveys, livestock covers only those that are tended and raised by an operator.

• Poultry – a collective term for all domesticated avian for the purpose of food consumption or, the carcass of such avian are processed for human consumption.
