Davao Oriental’s population was recorded at 576,343 persons
The population of Davao Oriental as of 01 May 2020 was 576,343 persons. This population count is based on the 2020 Census of Population and Housing (CPH). The population in 2020 is higher by 17,385 compared with the population of 558,958 in 2015, and by 58,725 compared with the population of 517,618 in 2010. Refer to Table 1
The province’s population grew by 0.65 percent
Davao Oriental population increased by 0.65 percent annually, on average, during the period 2015 to 2020. This is the lowest growth rate since the 1960 census. By comparison, the rate at which the province’s population grew during the period 2010 to 2015 was higher at 1.47 percent. See Table 2.
If the province’s current annual population growth rate (APGR) of 0.65 percent continues, the population of Davao Oriental is expected to double in 107.7 years.
One in every four persons in the province resided in City of Mati
The population of City of Mati, the province’s capital and lone city, was recorded at 147,547 persons which accounted for about 25.6 percent of the Davao Oriental’s population in 2020. Davao Oriental has 10 municipalities. In 2020, municipality of Lupon had the biggest population of 66,979 persons or 11.62 percent. This was followed by the municipality of Governor Generoso with 59,891 persons or 10.39 percent, and the municipality of Baganga with 58,714 persons or 10.19 percent. The combined population of these three municipalities accounted for about 32.20 percent of the Davao Oriental population. See Table 3.
The municipality of Boston was the smallest municipality in 2020, in terms of population size, with 14,618 persons. This population accounted for only 2.54 percent of the province’s population. The municipality of Governor Generoso was the fastest growing political subdivision with an average APGR of 1.77 percent. The municipality of Lupon, on the other hand, was the slowest with an annual PGR of 0.38 percent only. Additionally, three municipalities posted negative APGR, as follows: Manay (-1.58 percent), San Isidro (-1.42 percent), and Caraga (-0.35 percent).
Barangay Central in City of Mati was the largest barangay
There are 183 barangays in the province. The largest barangay in terms of population size is Central (Pob.) in City of Mati with 34,947 persons. It was followed by Dahican, also in City of Mati, with 18,253 persons and Poblacion in Lupon with 17,362 persons. Three other barangays posted a population size of more than ten thousand persons, namely: Matiao (City of Mati) with 16,234 persons, Sainz (City of Mati with 10,377 persons, and Tibanban (Governor Generoso) with 10,016 persons. See Table 4.
Meanwhile, Lantawan in Lupon was the smallest barangay in terms of population size with 396 persons. It was followed by Mabini in Manay (478) and Maputi in San Isidro (575). Two other barangays posted a population size of less than seven hundred persons. See Table 5.
