With a total of 6,064,744 followers or 6.01% of Philippines' total population, Islam is the second largest religion in Mindanao based on the result of the 2015 Census of Population (2015 POPCEN).
The Mindanao island group is home to majority of the Filipino Muslims in the Philippines. It is where 93% of the entire Islamic population resides.
Of Mindanao’s 24,135,775 population, Muslims make up about 23.39% of the island’s entire population with more than half of this percentage (14.30%) occupying the ARMM.
In the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) alone where majority of the Muslims reside, 9 out of 10 of the regions’ population are followers of Islam.
SOCCSKSARGEN is the second most populated with Muslims among the six regions in Mindanao.
Caraga has the least number of adherents of Islam with only 0.48% of the regions’ population and a miniscule 0.05% of Mindanao’s’ entire population.
Members of the Muslim community are concentrated in the five provinces of ARMM. Among the 28 provinces in Mindanao, Lanao del Sur has the largest percentage of Muslims with 94% of its population practicing Islam, contributing approximately 4.05% of the islands’ total population.
It can be noted that there is no province from Caraga and Davao Region that landed in the top 10 list.
Among the cities in Mindanao, Zamboanga City from Region 9 tops the list of the most Muslim-populated area with 302,795 followers; this was trailed by Cotabato City (228,036 persons), City of Isabela (72,182 persons) Davao City (63,127 persons) and General Santos City (51,705 persons).
