Davao Region started off this year with high inflation at 4.1 percent. Inflation in December 2017 was posted at 4.1 percent and in January 2017, 3.6 percent. The uptrend was primarily due to the higher annual increment of almost all of the commodities which include the following:
• Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco (7.8%)
• Clothing and Footwear (4.5%)
• Furnishing, Household Equipment and Routine Maintenance of the House (4.3%)
• Health (4.0%)
• Housing, Water, Electricity Gas, and other Fuels (3.8%)
• Transport (3.3%)
• Recreation and Culture (2.6%)
Meanwhile, slower annual growth were seen for Food and Non Alcoholic Beverages at 4.7 percent, while Education (2.7%), Restaurant and Miscellaneous Goods and Services (1.5%), and Communication (0.3%) retained its rate.
Among the provinces of Davao Region, the province of Compostela Valley had the highest inflation rate at 4.8 percent in January 2018. It was followed by Davao del Norte (4.4%), Davao Oriental (4.1%), and Davao del Sur at
3.4 percent.
Moreover, the Purchasing Power of Peso (PPP) in January 2018 was at 61 centavos in the region, about 3 centavos lower from the previous year’s PPP of 64 centavos. The province of Davao del Sur had the highest PPP at
64 centavos followed by Compostela Valley at 61 centavos, while Davao del Norte and Davao Oriental had the lowest at 59 centavos, respectively.
