The 2015-2016 Survey on Food Demand (SFD) results revealed that the estimated annual per capita consumption of rice in Davao Region went down to 94.404 kilograms, 10.77% lower than the 2012 SFD level of 105.798 kilograms (Table 1). All the provinces had shown reduced consumption levels, with Compostela Valley having the largest decline at 33.57%.
Across provinces, the biggest yearly rice consumption was noted in Davao del Norte at 129.574 kilograms and lowest in Compostela Valley at 60.542 kilograms.
Looking at the levels by barangay classification, households living in the urban barangays of the region had higher consumption level at 119.474 kilograms than those in the rural barangays. However, in Davao del Norte, rural dwellers had a slightly bigger consumption at 129.856 kilograms than those residents in the urban barangays.
On the other hand, the regional consumption of corn remarkably grew to 40.679 kilograms, up by 47.43% from the 2012 level of 27.593 kilograms (Table 2). Among the provinces, corn was most consumed in Compostela Valley at 94.362 kilograms and least consumed in Davao del Norte at 10.477 kilograms.
Annual consumption of corn was bigger in rural barangays at 57.184 kilograms than in urban barangays. High preference for corn was most evident in the rural barangays of Compostela Valley where corn consumption reached111.000 kilograms per person in a year.
