Production of Vegetables and Root Crops declined by 2.0 percent

In 2024 Vegetables and Root Crops produced 144,204.49 Metric Tons (MT) in the region. It contracted by 2.0 percent from 147,164.28 MT in 2023. The decline was attributed to the production decrease of papaya green by 1,063.30 MT and cassava fresh tubers by 618.35 MT, from 2023 to 2024. Total Vegetables and Root Crops production between 2022 and 2023 dropped by 2.5 percent.

Top 10 Vegetables and Root Crops by Volume of Production

Top 10 Vegetables and Root Crops contributed for 68.2 percent of the total production in the region, while the rest shared 31.8 percent. 

• Cassava fresh tubers accounted for 13.0 percent of the total production or 18,726.00 MT. It had a decreasing trend by 3.2 percent and by 1.6 percent in 2024 and 2023, respectively. 

• Camote or sweet potato at second yielded 17,222.12 MT, contributed 11.9 percent to the total production. It had a decreasing trend by 3.1 percent and by 1.9 percent in 2024 and 2023, respectively.

• At third, sitao or string beans shared 8.3 percent to the total production or 11,963.15 MT. It declined by 1.3 percent 2024 and by 0.7 percent in 2023.

• Potato shared 7.5 percent to the total production or 10,791.81 MT. It contracted both in 2024 and 2023 by 1.5 percent and 6.3 percent, accordingly.

• At fifth green papaya attributed 6.0 percent to the total production or 8,646.89 MT. Its production significantly decreased by 11.0 percent in 2024. It likewise contracted in 2023 by 0.5 percent

• Contributing to 4.9 percent to the total production or 7,060.52 MT, banana blossom notably rose by 14.6 percent in 2024, a turnaround from a dropped by 23.1 percent in 2023.
 

Vegetables and Root Crops Production by Province

Davao del Sur had the highest percentage share of Vegetables and Root Crops production in the region with 48.5 percent or 69,870.31 MT.

Followed by Davao de Oro at 21.6 percent to total production, estimated at 31,147.93 MT.

Davao del Norte and Davao Oriental with 14.4 percent and 11.4 percent share or produced 20,770.32 MT and 16,432.76 MT, respectively.

Davao Occidental shared the least in total production, contributing just 4.1 percent or 5,983.19 MT.

 

TECHNICAL NOTES

The data from this Special Release was based on the Crops Production Survey (CrPS). It is a quarterly survey which aims to generate basic production statistics for crops other than palay and corn at the national and sub-national levels. It covers more than 280 crops sub-classified under three commodity groupings, namely: 1) Non-Food and Industrial Crops, 2) Fruit Crops, and 3) Vegetables and Rootcrops. The commodity coverage by province differs and depends on what each province produces.

Crop Production is the quantity produced and actually harvested for a particular crop during the reference period. It includes those harvested but damaged, stolen, given away, consumed, given as harvesters’ and threshers’ shares, reserved etc. Excluded are those produced but not harvested due to low price, lack of demand and force majeure or fortuitous events, etc.
