Production of Vegetables and Root Crops declines by 2.5 percent
In 2023 Vegetables and Root Crops produced 147,164.28 Metric Tons (MT) in the region. It contracted by 2.5 percent from 150,988.73 metric tons in 2022. The decline was largely credited to the production decrease of banana blossom by 1,846.29 MT and eggplant by 418.411 MT, from 2022 to 2023. Similarly, between 2021 and 2022 total Vegetables and Root Crops production dropped by 0.3 percent.
Top 10 Vegetables and Root Crops by Volume of Production
Top 10 Vegetables and Root Crops contributed for 68.0 percent of the total production in the region while the rest shared 32.0 percent.
Cassava accounted for 13.1 percent of the total production or 19,344.35. MT. Its production decreased by 1.6 percent in 2023, a reversal from an increase of 1.2 percent in 2022.
Sweet potato or camote at second yielded 17,778.69 MT. It had a decreasing trend by 1.9 percent and by 1.0 in 2023 and 2022, respectively.
At third, stringbeans shared 8.2 percent to the total production or 12,126.30 MT. It declined by 0.7 percent 2023 and by 2.0 percent in 2022.
Potato shared 7.4 percent to the total production or 10,957.93 MT. It had a decreasing trend by 6.3 percent in 2023 and 2.6 percent in 2022.
At fifth green papaya attributed 6.6 percent to the total production or 9,710.19 MT. Its production both decreased in 2023 and 2022 by 0.5 percent and 3.7 percent, respectively.
Contributing to 4.7 percent to the total production or 6,962.57 MT, squash fruit declined by 2.2 percent in 2023, a reversal from an increase 2.1 percent growth in 2022.
Vegetables and Root Crops Production by Province
Davao del Sur had the highest percentage share of Vegetables and Root Crops production in the region with 47.6 percent or 70,086.14 MT.
Followed by Davao de Oro at 22.8 percent to total production, estimated at 33,546.96 MT.
Davao del Norte and Davao Oriental with 14.0 percent and 11.5 percent share or produced 20,667.91 MT and 16,861.54 MT, respectively.
Davao Occidental shared the least in total production, contributing just 4.1 percent or 6,001.73 MT.

TECHNICAL NOTES
The data from this Special Release was based on the Crops Production Survey (CrPS). It is a quarterly survey which aims to generate basic production statistics for crops other than palay and corn at the national and sub-national levels. It covers more than 280 crops sub-classified under three commodity groupings, namely: 1) Non-Food and Industrial Crops, 2) Fruit Crops, and 3) Vegetables and Rootcrops. The commodity coverage by province differs and depends on what each province produces.
Crop Production is the quantity produced and actually harvested for a particular crop during the reference period. It includes those harvested but damaged, stolen, given away, consumed, given as harvesters’ and threshers’ shares, reserved etc. Excluded are those produced but not harvested due to low price, lack of demand and force majeure or fortuitous events, etc.
