An average of 89 deaths daily in Davao RegionReported deaths in Davao Region in 2019 reached 32,384, an increase of 8.4 percent than the previous year’s 29,870 deaths. This is equivalent to a crude death rate (CDR) of 6.2 or about six (6) persons per thousand population.
An average of 89 persons died daily in 2019, which translates to 4 deaths per hour.
The number of deaths in Davao Region from 2010 to 2019 showed an increasing trend except in the years 2013 and 2014. The increase during the ten-year period is 36.6 percent, from 23,711 in 2010 to 32,384 in 2019 (Figure 1 and Table 1).
One in three deaths recorded in City of Davao
Among the provinces and Highly Urbanized City (HUC) in Davao Region, City of Davao had the highest number of deaths in 2019, with 11,146 (34.4% of region’s total deaths), followed by Davao del Norte with 7,110 (22.0%) and Davao de Oro with 4,583 (14.2%).
On the other hand, Davao Occidental had the least number of deaths with 1,409 (4.4%) (Figure 2 and Table 2).
More deaths in males than females
Figure 3 shows the the age and sex pattern of deaths in 2019. It reflects an inverted pyramid, with fewer deaths at the younger ages, except for children under one, and progressively increasing as people grow older.
The number of deaths in males (18,931) was higher than deaths in females (13,453) in 2019.
Highest proportion of males died at the age of 65 to 69 (10.9% or 2,067) while largest proportion of females (12.6% or 1,698) died in their oldest age group, 85 years old and over (Table 3).
More than half of deaths not medically attended
Medically attended deaths are those attended by a medical doctor or any other allied health care provider.
Out of 32,384 registered deaths in Davao Region, less than half (44.6% or 14,443) were medically attended. The percentage of medically attended deaths in the provinces and HUC ranges from 28.7 in Davao Occidental to 49.0 in City of Davao (Table 4).
November 2019 recorded the highest average deaths per day
In terms of daily average, November recorded the highest average deaths per day with 102. On the other hand, March, April and August registered the least daily average with 83 deaths per day (Figure 4 and Table 5).
Highest number of infant deaths recorded in City of Davao
Infant deaths are deaths that occurred before reaching age 1. In Davao Region, 1,110 infant deaths were registered in 2019. Three out of five deaths were males (642 or 57.8%).
Among the provinces and HUC, City of Davao registered the highest number of infant deaths with 399 (35.9%), followed by Davao del Norte with 283 (25.5%).
On the other hand, Davao Occidental had the least number of registered infant deaths with 24 (2.2%) (Table 6).
Highest number of maternal deaths recorded in Davao del Norte
According to World Health Organization, maternal death is a “death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy, irrespective of the duration and site of the pregnancy, from any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management but not from accidental or incidental causes. In 2019, there were 87 registered maternal deaths in Davao Region.
Among the provinces and HUC, Davao del Norte registered the highest number of maternal deaths with 23 (26.4%), followed by Davao de Oro with 18 (20.7%).
On the other hand, Davao Occidental had the least number of registered maternal deaths with 6 (6.9%) (Table 7).
EXPLANATORY NOTES
Data on deaths presented in this release were obtained from the Certificates of Death (Municipal Form No. 103) that were registered at the Office of the City/Municipal Civil Registrars in Davao Region and forwarded to the Philippine Statistics Authority. Information presented includes registered deaths which occurred from January to December 2019. Figures presented are not adjusted for under-registration.
Death refers to the permanent disappearance of all evidence of life at any time after live birth has taken place. It is a postnatal cessation of vital functions without capability of resuscitation.
Usual Place of Residence refers to the place where the deceased had habitually or permanently resided while still alive.
SUPPORT THE 2015-2024 CRVS DECADE
President Benigno S. Aquino III signed Proclamation No. 1106 on August 20, 2015 which declared the years 2015 to 2024 as Civil Registration and Vital Statistics Decade (CRVS). Said proclamation is a concrete manifestation of the Philippine government’s support to the outcome of the Ministerial Conference on CRVS in Asia and the Pacific held in November 2014 in Bangkok, Thailand.
