Fisheries production drops by 7.2 percentOverall, the total volume of fisheries production of Davao Region was recorded at 48,245.89 metric tons during the year 2019. It was lower by 7.2 percent compared from 51,983.43 metric tons production of the previous year.
Davao Region’s fisheries production showed a downward trend within the five-year period. From 59,498.46 metric tons production in year 2015, it was gradually decreasing to 56,670.56 metric tons in year 2017, and then it steeped during the last two years (2018-2019).
Out of the 2019 total fisheries output, about 49.8 percent of the regional production was attributed in the aquaculture subsector. Municipal fisheries contributed 45.0 percent, composed of marine and inland fisheries at 44.50 percent and 0.50 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, production from commercial fisheries showed the least contribution at 5.2 percent.
Commercial Fisheries Production
Commercial fishing of Davao Region registered a 28.8 percent decreased in its production from 3,498.54 metric tons in the year 2018 to 2,490.76 metric tons in the current year.
By province, more than half of the commercial fisheries outputs were posted in Davao City. Davao Oriental’s production contributed about 37.9 percent, while 8.6 percent was accounted in Davao Occidental. There were 2.6 percent of commercial outputs unloaded in Davao del Sur. On the other hand, the provinces of Davao del Norte and Davao de Oro are not part of the Commercial Fisheries Survey since there are no commercial fishing operations administered in both provinces.
In 2019, Davao Region’s commercial species with most volume of production were Yellowfin tuna, Roundscad, Big-eye tuna and Frigate tuna.
• The volume of unloading of Yellowfin tuna was estimated at 910.57 metric tons, higher by 90.4 percent compared to the output from the previous year.
• Roundscad production posted about 299.28 metric tons, a 53.5 percent dropped in its production.
• About 268.92 metric tons of Big-eye tuna was produced in the region. This figure slowed down by 3.3 percent from the previous year’s level.
• Davao Region’s Frigate tuna has a recorded production of 224.96 metric tons, lower by 23.6 percent from 2018’s output.
Municipal Fisheries Production
Municipal fisheries of Davao Region has a total production of 21,704.67 metric tons. This figure reduced by 6.1 percent from 23,120.86 metric tons output level in the prior year. The volume of municipal production was comprised of 98.1 percent marine fisheries, while the remaining was contributed by inland fisheries.
About 42.1 percent of the municipal production of Davao Region were caught in the province of Davao Oriental. Davao Occidental’s production contributed 39.3 percent in the regional output. The municipal fishes produced in the province of Davao del Sur accounted at 9.6 percent. Meanwhile, the provinces of Davao del Norte and Davao de Oro shared 3.8 percent a piece in the municipal production. And, minimal production of municipal fishes were recorded in Davao City at only 1.5 percent.
Marine Municipal Fisheries
During the reference year, marine municipal production of Davao Region dropped by 6.2 percent from 22,876.92 metric tons in year 2018 to 21,455.32 metric tons in the current year.
Marine species with the highest catch were as follows: Other Species, Squid, Big-eyed Scad, and Yellowfin tuna.
• Other Species recorded with the most production at 3,984.09 metric tons, an increased of 70.9 percent from last year’s output.
• A dominant production of Squid was also revealed, with an estimated volume at 3,421.74 metric tons. It exhibited an increased of 101.2 percent from the level of output in the previous year.
• Big-eyed scad recorded an annual production of 2,154.97 metric tons. It went down by 30.0 percent from the 2018’s output at 3,078.19 metric tons.
• Yellowfin tuna showed a decreased production at 17.0 percent. Yellowfin’s output reached to 1,991.11 metric tons from 2,399.53 metric tons of last year.
Inland Municipal Fisheries
Inland fisheries of Davao Region posted a positive growth at 2.2 percent, from 243.94 metric tons of last year’s annual production compared to this year’s production level at 249.35 metric tons.
Most caught species in the inland waters were the following: Tilapia, Other Species, Freshwater Goby (Biya) and Catfish (Hito).
• Tilapia has the most catch at 79.99 metric tons. This year’s production reduced by 3.0 percent from 82.43 metric tons catch in the previous year.
• Other inland fishes have an increased catch of 52.3 percent, with this year’s production level at 37.04 metric tons.
• Freshwater Goby (Biya) rebounded its production at 18.51 metric tons compared from last year’s annual output at only 1.25 metric tons.
• Catfish (Hito) has an annual production of17.83 metric tons. This figure was higher by 56.3 percent from 11.41 metric tons of previous year’s production.
Aquaculture Production
The annual aquaculture production of Davao Region recorded a total of 24,050.46 metric tons. It fell short by 5.2 percent from the previous year’s mark at 25,364.03 metric tons.
By geographical location, the province of Davao del Sur showed substantial contribution in the production of aquaculture at 46.7 percent. The province of Davao Occidental followed by a 25.3 percent share of the aquaculture outputs. Meanwhile, about 12.3 percent of the aquaculture harvest was in the province of Davao del Norte. A single-digit percentage of production were recorded Davao City and Davao Oriental at 8.5 percent and 4.8 percent, respectively. On the other hand, least percentage of aquaculture fisheries were harvested in Davao de Oro at 2.5 percent.
During the year 2019, aquaculture species with major harvests were as follows: Milkfish, Seaweeds and Tilapia.
• Production of Milkfish was estimated at 13,398.78 metric tons, which declined by 7.2 percent from the production of last year.
• Seaweeds production was estimated at 5,881.31 metric tons and exhibited a 15.1 percent reduction from the previous year’s level.
• Volume of harvests for Tilapia reached to 2,116.21 metric tons. It surpassed its 2019 output by 20.0 percent.
TECHNICAL NOTES
This Special Release presents the data on volume of production of fisheries of the year 2019 in Davao Region. It contains information on the current situation by major species of the three (3) fisheries subsector, namely: commercial and municipal fisheries, and aquaculture. It serves as output of the four (4) fisheries surveys regularly conducted by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). The surveys are: Quarterly Commercial Fisheries Survey (QCFS), Quarterly Municipal Fisheries Survey (QMFS), Quarterly Inland Fisheries Survey (QIFS) and Quarterly Aquaculture Survey (QAqS).
Fisheries - all activities relating to the act or business of fishing, culturing, preserving, processing, marketing, developing, conserving and managing aquatic resources and the fishery areas including the privilege to fish or take aquatic resources thereof (RA 8550).
Commercial fishing – is the catching of fish with the use of fishing boats with a capacity of more than three gross tons for trade, business or profit beyond subsistence or sports fishing.
Marine Municipal Fishing - covers fishing operation carried out with or without the use of a boat weighing three gross tons or less.
Inland Municipal Fishing - the catching of fish, crustaceans, mollusks and all other aquatic animals and plants in inland water like lakes, rivers, dams, marshes, etc. using simple gears and fishing boats some of which are non-motorized with a capacity of three gross tons or less; or fishing not requiring the use of fishing boats.
Aquaculture - fishery operation involving all forms of raising and culturing of fish and other fishery species in marine, in fresh, brackish and marine water areas. The operation is comprised of activities from stocking to harvesting of species under controlled conditions in farming facility called aquafarm.
