An average of 17 registered deaths per day
Reported deaths in 2021 reached 6,290, an increase of 41.9 percent from the 4,432 registered deaths in 2020. This is equivalent to a crude death rate of 8.0, or about eight (8) deaths per thousand population in 2021. This corresponds to an average of 17 deaths per day.
The number of registered deaths from 2012 to 2021 showed an increasing trend except in the years 2013, 2017, and 2020. (Figure 1 and Table 1)
Highest number of deaths recorded in Compostela
The top three municipalities in terms of the number of registered deaths by usual residence were Compostela with 826 deaths (13.1% share), Monkayo with 770 (12.2%), and Nabunturan with 761 (12.1%). The combined share of these three municipalities was 37.5 percent of the total registered deaths in 2021.
On the other hand, the three municipalities which had the least number of registered deaths were Mawab with 366 deaths (5.8%), Mabini with 382 (6.1%), and Montevista with 392 (6.2%). These municipalities accounted for only 18.1 percent of the total registered deaths in the country in the same year. (Figure 2 and Table 2)
September 2021 recorded the most number of deaths
In terms of daily average, September recorded the highest with 23 average deaths per day. On the other hand, March marked the least daily average number of deaths with 14 deaths per day. (Figure 3 and Table 3)
More male deaths than female deaths recorded
Figure 4 shows the age-sex structure of registered deaths in 2021. It shows an inverted pyramid, with fewer deaths at the younger ages, except for children under one year old, and progressively increasing as people grow older. In Davao de Oro, male deaths (3,649) were higher than female deaths (2,641) in 2021. The highest proportion of males died at the age of 60 to 64 years old (415 or 11.4% of male deaths) while the largest proportion of females (375 or 14.2% of female deaths) died in the oldest age group, 85 years old and over.
The sex ratio of 138 indicates that there were 138 male deaths for every 100 female deaths. Moreover, a sex ratio of over a hundred means that more male deaths were registered compared to their female counterparts in each age group before 80 years old. Further, higher proportions of female deaths were observed in the older age groups (80 years old and over) compared to their male counterparts. (Figure 4)
