Fruits: Production volume decreased by 1.04 percent in 2023 compared to 2022

The total volume of fruit production in Davao de Oro for 2023 reached 777,734.74 metric tons, reflecting a decrease of 1.04 percent or 8,174.99 metric tons compared to the 785,909.73 metric tons recorded in 2022.

By fruit type, major fruits experienced a decline of 1.19 percent, with production dropping from 782,936.11 metric tons in 2022 to 773,580.09 metric tons in 2023. This decline was attributed to reduced bunch harvests caused by the impact of fusarium wilt on banana cavendish. Conversely, the production of other fruits showed a significant increase of 39.72 percent, rising from 2,973.62 metric tons in 2022 to 4,154.65 metric tons in 2023. The increase was primarily driven by more abundant fruiting of durian, lanzones, mangosteen, and rambutan, attributed to their cyclical fruiting patterns.

Non-Food Industrial Commercial Crops (NFICCs): The volume of production decreased by 1.31 percent in 2023 compared to 2022

The total volume of Non-Food Industrial Commercial Crops (NFICCs) produced in Davao de Oro in 2023 declined to 201,802.00 metric tons, marking a decrease of 1.31 percent compared to the 204,470.78 metric tons recorded in 2022.

By category, Major Non-Food Crops contributed 188,723.90 metric tons in 2023, reflecting a decrease of 1.16 percent from the 190,944.69 metric tons in the previous year. This decline is primarily attributed to a reduction in coconut (mature) harvesting activities, driven by the low prices offered by local buyers. Meanwhile, the production of Other NFICCs fell by 3.31 percent, with a total of 13,078.10 metric tons in 2023, down from 13,526.09 metric tons in 2022. This decrease is linked to a reduced harvest of coconut sap/tuba, as many farmers shifted their focus to copra production, which can affect the number of bearing trees.

Vegetables: Volume of production increased by 0.79 percent in 2023 compared to 2022

The volume of vegetable production in Davao de Oro saw a modest increase of 0.79 percent in 2023, reaching 34,021.24 metric tons compared to 33,753.26 metric tons in 2022.

In the category of vegetables, the production of major vegetables decreased by 0.67 percent, with 17,078.44 metric tons recorded in 2023, down from 17,194.25 metric tons in the previous year. This decline was primarily attributed to the impact of aphids and thrips in eggplants. On the other hand, the production of other vegetables rose by 2.32 percent, increasing to 16,942.80 metric tons in 2023 from 16,559.01 metric tons in 2022. The growth in this category can be attributed to the higher harvests of both ginger and cucumber, driven by increased harvesting activities due to better prices offered by local buyer and increased fertilizer usage.

Technical Notes

The data from this Special Release was based on the Crops Production Survey (CrPS). It is a quarterly survey which aims to generate basic production statistics for crops other than palay and corn at the national and sub-national levels. It covers more than 280 crops subclassified under three commodity groupings, namely: 1) Non-Food and Industrial Crops, 2) Fruit Crops, and 3) Vegetables and Root crops. The commodity coverage by province differs and depends on what each province produces.

Crop Production is the quantity produced and actually harvested for a particular crop during the reference period. It includes those harvested but damaged, stolen, given away, consumed, given as harvesters' and threshers' shares, reserved etc. Excluded are those produced but not harvested due to low price, lack of demand and force majeure or fortuitous events, etc.CrPS survey results are posted at the PSA website (https://openstat.psa.gov.ph).
