The City of Davao had a total population of 1,776,949 individuals based on the 2020 Census of Population and Housing or 2020 CPH. Comprising 99.7 percent of this total was the household population, which were 1,770,988 individuals.
Of the 1.77 million household population in 2020, 50.7 percent or 897.46 thousand individuals were male and 49.3 percent or 873.52 thousand individuals were female. Categorically by age group, 526.16 thousand (29.7%) were young dependents or individuals under 15 years old while 1.16 million (65.48%) were the working-age group (15 to 64 years old) or the economically-active population. The remaining 85.25 thousand (4.8%) were old dependents or individuals 65 years old and over. Individuals aged 0 to 14 years old, 15 to 64 years old, and 65 years old and over accounted for 30.5, 65.4, and 4.0 percent, respectively, of the household population of Davao City in 2015. (Figure 1).
Furthermore, among the age group of 0 to 54 years old, the number of males (89.6%) exceeded that of the number of females (87.7%). On the other hand, among the age group of 55 years old and over, there were fewer males (10.4%) than females (12.3%). A similar trend was also observed in 2015. (Figure 1).
Median age increased to 25.7 years
- The median age in 2020 increased by 1.2 from 24.5 years in 2015. The median age of 25.7 indicates that half of the entire population were aged less than 25.7 and the other half are over the age of 25.7.
Sex Ratio increased to 103 males per 100 females
- Of the total household population in 2020, 50.7 percent were male and 49.3 percent were female. This translates to 103 males for every 100 females. Categorically by age group, individuals under 15 years old had a sex ratio of 106 males per 100 females, individuals aged 15 to 64 years old had a sex ratio of 103 males per 100 females, and individuals aged 65 years old and over had a sex ratio of 79 males per 100 females. (Figure 2).
Dependency Ratio remains at 53 dependents for every 100 individuals in the working-age group
- The overall dependency ratio in 2020 was 53 dependents for every 100 individuals in the working-age group or economically-active population. Among the 53 dependents, 45 were young dependents and seven were old dependents. A similar trend was observed in 2015, where the dependency ratio was computed at 53 dependents, with 47 young dependents and six old dependents. (Table 1).
Individuals under five years of age have a sex ratio of 106 males per 100 females
- Comprising 10.0 percent (177.31 thousand) of the total household population in 2020 were children below the age of five. This was a small decrease compared to the 10.4 percent (168.32 thousand) posted in 2015. The sex ratio also decreased to 106 males per 100 females in 2020 from 108 males per 100 females in 2015. (Table 2).
School-Age Population computed at 38.6 percent
- The school-age population, consisting of 5 to 24 year olds, accounted for 38.6 percent or 684.39 thousand of the 1.77 million household population in 2020. This was lower than the result reported in 2015 which was 40.7 percent or 660.83 thousand. (Table 2 and Figure 3).
There are three youths for every ten individuals in Davao City
- Constituting about 30.0 percent (530.77 thousand) of the household population of Davao City in 2020 were the youth or individuals aged 15 to 30 years old. This was lower compared to what was reported in 2015 which was 31.9 percent (516.84 thousand). (Table 2 and Figure 4).
More than three-fifths of the household population were of voting age
- The voting-age population or individuals aged 18 years and over account for 64.9 percent, or 1.15 million, of the total household population of Davao City in 2020. This an increase from 64.0 percent, or 1.04 million, from 2015. (Table 2 and Figure 5).
Females outnumber males within the senior population
1. Of the total household population in 2020, senior citizens or individuals aged 60 years and over totaled 138.03 thousand or 7.8 percent. This was higher than the 6.7 percent reported in 2015. Females (54.5%) outnumber males (45.5%) within the senior population in 2020 translating to a sex ratio of 84 males per 100 females.
A similar trend was observed in 2015 with the senior population having a sex ratio of 85 males per 100 females. (Table 2 and Figure 6).
Female household population of reproductive age dropped by 0.8 percent
- Totaling to 473.56 thousand individuals were women of reproductive age (15 to 49 years old). This was about 54.2 percent of the total female household population in 2020 – lower than the 55.0 percent reported in 2015. (Table 2 and Figure 7).
Aging index in 2020 increased by 4.2 points
- Aging index refers to the number of seniors (aged 60 years and over) per 100 children younger than 15 years old in a specific population. Thus, the higher the index is, the older the population results. In 2020, the aging index was 26.2 percent, roughly translating to about one senior per four children younger than 15 years old. The aging index in 2015 was 22.0 percent. (Table 2 and Figure 8).
